Favorite Inspirational Readings: Mother Teresa

This poem by Mother Teresa may be the most inquired about reading I’ve ever done in a class — I’ve started bringing copies of it to class if I plan on using it, because I KNOW someone is going to ask! I’ve seen it in various books and on various websites entitled either “Anyway” or “The Final Analysis.” Enjoy!

Favorite Inspirational Readings: Rumi’s The Guest House

A few readings I’ve used in classes have gotten so much good feedback that I’m posting them here so you can enjoy them whenever you please. I’m glad to know others find them as inspiring as I do!  Here’s the first installment of many.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Buddha Everywhere, Part One

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERAWhile the days here in northeast Ohio are finally getting longer, they are by no means getting warmer. In an attempt to be positive, I am returning in my mind to warm places I’ve been. I remember being amused to find this Buddha statue in the (then) sleepy town of Playa del Carmen, Mexico during spring of 2006.
